Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels and wide receiver Terry McLaurin have both been ruled out for Sunday's (September 28) game against the Atlanta Falcons, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Friday (September 26).
"#Commanders QB Jayden Daniels (knee sprain) has been ruled out for Sunday," Rapoport wrote on his X account. "Terry McLaurin was also ruled out. While Daniels was pushing to play, doctors did not clear him."
Commanders head coach Dan Quinn confirmed that both players would be inactive with Marcus Mariota, who started 13 games for the Falcons in 2023, starting in Daniels' absence for the second consecutive week. Mariota threw for 207 yards and one touchdown on 15 of 21 passing during Washington's Week 3 win against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Daniels suffered a knee sprain during his team's Week 2 Thursday Night Football loss against the Green Bay Packers. The second-year quarterback underwent an MRI last week and the injury isn't suspected to be a long-term issue.
McLaurin suffered a quad injury during the Commanders' Week 3 win and was designated as a non-participant in practice from Wednesday (September 24) to Friday. The veteran wide receiver hasn't missed a game since Week 16 of the 2020 season.
Daniels led the Commanders to their first postseason berth since the 2020 season, which ended with a loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game and had one of the greatest rookie seasons for the quarterback in NFL history, winning the 2024 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award after throwing for 3,568 yards, 25 touchdowns and nine interceptions on 331 of 480 passing, while also recording 891 yards and six touchdowns on 148 rushing attempts. McLaurin has led the Commanders in receptions and receiving yards in each year since his rookie season in 2019, as well as touchdown receptions in four of his first six seasons.
