Gymnast Simone Biles and swimmer Katie Ledecky solidified their statuses as the greatest American Olympians in their respective sports during Day Six of the 2024 Paris Olympics on Thursday (August 1).
Biles won gold in the women's individual all-around final, becoming the first American woman to do so twice in history, with a total score of 59.131. The 27-year-old's victory extended her record for most gold medals won by an American gymnast to six and broke a tie with Shannon Miller for the most total medals won by an American gymnast at nine.
Brazil's Rebeca Andrade claimed silver with a score of 57.932 and USA teammate Suni Lee -- who won the individual in all-around in Biles' absence at the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Games -- claimed bronze with a score of 56.465.
Ledecky, who previously won gold in the 1500-meter freestyle on Wednesday (July 31) and bronze in the 400-meter freestyle final on Saturday (July 27), added a silver medal for her leg in Team USA's second-place finish in the women's 4x200-meter freestyle rally. The Washington, D.C. native has now medaled 13 times since winning gold in the 800-meter freestyle at the age of 15 during her international debut at the 2012 London Olympic Games. The Americans finished with a time of 7:40.86, with heavily-favored Australia winning gold with a time of 7:38.08 and China taking bronze at 7:42.34.
